Conflict avoidance is increasingly recognised as a vital tool for improving collaboration, protecting cash flow and reducing costly disputes across the UK construction industry. In this interview with Matthew Garratt, Commercial Director at Dalkia Engineering, Len Bunton will explore the importance of the Conflict Avoidance Pledge, which promotes early intervention to resolve issues before they escalate into formal disputes.
They will discuss how a proactive approach to conflict avoidance can help address ongoing challenges around payment practices and cash flow, while strengthening relationships across the supply chain. It also explores why Dalkia Engineering signed the Conflict Avoidance Pledge in 2024, the benefits the business sees in supporting the initiative, and the role that collaboration and cooperation play in delivering better project outcomes.
Matthew has extensive commercial leadership experience, having previously held commercial director roles at Costain, where he worked on major UK infrastructure projects, and NG Bailey. He has been a member of the NEC Contract Board and has served on the NEC Panel since 2005.
The interview will also highlight the upcoming Conflict Avoidance Coalition (CAC) Conference, taking place in London on 16 September 2026, where industry leaders will come together to discuss best practice in dispute avoidance and collaborative working.
