Errigal - Best Practice
Innovation overview and development
An overview of the digital innovation
Errigal have implemented an online training programme with the help of a micro learning platform – EdApp to improve quality, efficiency, and safety on site. The idea is to help train our employees in multiple languages on best practice standards on site to meet quality needs and provide tips to improve efficiencies in the fit-out department.
This is achieved by creating bite sized videos that have been developed by our in-house certified tutors and published to ‘EdApp’. These videos are available to everyone in the company to help educate each department and operative, so they understand the ‘Errigal Way’ when it comes to internal fit out.
Within each course they will be asked specific question about the video they just watched to enhance and embed their learning. Studies say this strategy improves retention on learning by 25%.
The analytics is the game changer for us, Ed app Errigal the ability to analyse which questions are being answered incorrectly or which operatives need our support. The training team focuses on these areas to ensure that every employee has the best opportunity to improve at their profession. We have seen huge improvements quality, productivity and staff morale.
How the digital innovation was developed, including effective collaboration, knowledge transfer and partnership along the project team
The Errigal Online Training Programme was developed during the Covid Pandemic. With so many travel restrictions in place it was impossible for our tutors to get to all of our sites across the UK to deliver essential training and upskilling to our operatives and management teams onsite. So Errigal developed an online training programme still delivered by our certified tutors but virtually. The Errigal “How – to” videos are a step-by-step guide on how to install the systems involved in drywall and interior systems.
Our Videos are recorded and made at our training academy and all videos are approved by British Gypsum before being delivered to our wider workforce. The videos are delivered in a workshop fashion, starting with Drylining Course 1. Every Director, Project Manager, Site Manager, Supervisor, Operative and labourer are all taken through the same training. The How-to videos have now become part of the Errigal Induction process and before an operative starts onsite he must complete the relative training. To help us scale this p process we invested in existing technology called EdApp, this allowed us to digitise the process. Each member can take the course via their mobile phone and will get notified when a new course has been published. There is leader boards and certificates up for grabs which provides friendly competition between sites and operatives. We have a full project team in place to help with the production and releasing of each videos, this includes Contracts Directors/ Site Managers / Operatives / IT and more , this ensures our videos are at the highest quality. There is no room for mistake at Errigal.
Details on the measurable commercial results
Cost performance index has improved on some sites by 20%, although we cannot attribute all of that to training, we are confident a portion Is attributable.
The main measure is the reduction in reworks / quality issues. This has seen a massive improvement as much as 30% in some sites.
We are performing better quality work at a faster pace.
How does this innovation improve processes
50% of learning is lost within 24 hours of the training taken place, with Errigal Online training Programme we can ensure that each employee receives a refresher course within that 24 hours leading to retention of the information increasing by 25%.
Our induction process is now stronger as we understand areas of weakness when a new operative starts this allows our training team to focus their training in these areas.
leader boards on site provides a friendly competition as they compete for the top spot on their knowledge of fit out.
We send out monthly reminders on each of the courses so that the operatives have refreshed their understanding, this previously was done in person but now can be done completely remote which has environmental benefits as we reduced the amount of paper and travel from our traditional methods.
How might this innovation influence the specification
We have a library of videos / courses to choose from. Depending on the specification on each job will drive what training each operative has access to. This ensure that each operatives knows the best way to build each specification.
For bespoke jobs we record the bespoke build in our R&D facility and send the video to each operative on site. This is key to meet our quality requirements.
Creation of novel internal systems to produce eco-innovation
This digital learning approach allows our operatives to access training content at any time via mobile phone/tablet.
Couple with our online induction for this ensure a smooth process when starts arriving to site as they learn the Errigal Way before starting there days’ work.
It has allowed our training team to focus more on creation of content and analytics of where improvement is needed all from head office. This has reduced the need for travel and print out documentation on site.
On site there has been a huge reduction in reworks meaning less material is being cut / machines being used improving the carbon emissions on site.
