New fire resistance testing has demonstrated that fixing clips are not essential to the performance of AIM Acoustic Insulation Manufacturing’s Raised Access Floor Barriers (RAFB) in voids up to 400mm – a market leading product development that will be welcomed by specifiers and installers, says AIM.
In a further product enhancement, permissible service penetrations have been expanded to include metal lid box trunking.
“We continuously develop our products based on market feedback,” says AIM’s Commercial Director Ian Exall. “Flooring system installers tell us that the requirement for fixing clips makes for a less desirable installation process. So, we invested in further fire resistance testing to confirm that fixing clips are not essential to our cavity barrier performance.”
Backed by test evidence provided to KIWA and noted in the revised KIWA Fire Safety Compliance (KFS) Field of Application report, it is now possible to install AIM’s RAFBs without fixing clips without compromise to the stated resistance for fire performance for the full range of fire ratings.
AIM Raised Access Floor Barriers prevent the passage of flame and smoke through under floor cavities for periods up to 120 minutes integrity and insulation. They are used for the subdivision of large uninterrupted cavities and for alignment under partitions to maintain partition fire rating.
When used with Rockwool Ablative Coated Batts supplied by AIM, the AIM RAFB system can be fitted around existing services, such as cable trays and pipes, and, now following these recent tests, metal lid box trunking. The system also allows for the retrospective penetration of services without the need to replace the barrier.

The reduction of flanking transmission of sound through the void can also be achieved with AIM’s RAFBs. The barrier reduces sound by at least 21 dB Rw and typically provides 51 dB with appropriate floor systems.
Available cut to size or in slab form for cutting on site, AIM’s RAFB is effective for voids from 50mm to 400mm.
