Global acoustic ceiling systems manufacturer OWA has played a key role in creating the inspirational interior design at the University of Hertfordshire’s new Spectra building, thanks to a range of its high-performance ceiling systems.

Designed by Nicholas Hare Architects and built by Morgan Sindall Construction, the £100 million facility in Hatfield is home to the university’s School of Physics, Engineering, and Computer Science. Opened in late 2024, the Spectra building is a bold expression of modern education design which combines collaborative learning environments with energy efficient construction.

OWA’s advanced metal ceiling solutions feature prominently throughout the facility and were selected for their durability, demountability and acoustic control. The central atrium showcases the floating metal OWAtecta S80 acoustic raft ceiling system that combines aesthetic precision with sound-absorbing performance. Engineered for flexibility, the S80 system allows multiple demountable hook-on panels to be configured into large acoustic raft structures. Therefore, making it a versatile choice for open-plan spaces and a smart alternative to mineral wool canopies.

In the specialist teaching and laboratory areas, OWAtecta S32L clip-in system was specified to provide a clean and concealed ceiling finish. With excellent resistance to wear and offering accessibility, the S32L is ideally suited to high-demand environments where both hygiene and acoustic clarity are key.

Measom was appointed as ceiling installation partner, with the work carried out by its Southeast division based in Essex. Contract Director Andy Hill commented:
“Working with OWA on this landmark scheme has been a real success and one that we can all be proud of. Their products give the design team freedom to realise their visions while meeting all the technical performance requirements. The modular nature of the S80 metal rafts in particular gave us the flexibility to deliver large-scale ceiling features while keeping everything accessible. The S80 acoustic rafts installed in the atrium look fantastic and deliver a professional finish that sets the tone for the whole building.”

A beacon for STEM education, the Spectra building sets a new standard in university design. The project also builds on OWA’s growing portfolio of education sector work, where adaptable, demountable ceiling solutions are increasingly being favoured to meet both design intent and long-term functionality.
