Construction Industry Publications (CIP) is delighted to announce that Suzannah Nichol, OBE, Build UK Chief Executive, has become the new Patron of the CIP Construction Health and Safety Manual. She succeeds the previous patron, Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.

Suzannah’s association with the Manual began more than 30 years ago, when she first contributed as a practising Health and Safety Manager, and it has continued through every stage of her career, from Health and Safety Director at the Construction Confederation to her current position as Chief Executive of Build UK. She has been an integral member of the editorial panel, and it is this long standing, unwavering support of the Manual throughout her career that reflects her belief in its enduring value to the industry and makes her the ideal Patron.

Written by Health and Safety Directors and Advisors who represent a wide cross section of the UK’s leading construction companies and clients, this Manual provides construction companies working in the UK with a useful and pragmatic tool to help them comply with their legal duties and to improve the way health and safety issues are managed throughout the construction process.

As Build UK Chief Executive, Suzannah ensures her Members, Clients, Contractors, Professional Advisers and Trade Associations work with CIP to uphold industry recognised health, safety and environmental policies and standards within the Manual. This integrated approach aims to improve the knowledge and practices of those on site without duplicating information or publishing conflicting advice.

Writing in her foreword, Suzannah says: “This manual has been created not as a box-ticking exercise, but as a genuine and collaborative commitment to protecting our people, partners, and the communities around us.

“It reflects the belief that health and safety is not just a series of rules to follow – but a culture to live by. From the smallest job to the most complex build, good practice begins with each of us understanding our responsibilities, taking ownership and looking out for one another. All the policies, procedures and guidelines within the manual have been developed from legislation and shaped by real experiences and lessons learned from projects across the industry. The information is designed to support you – whether you’re making the decisions, supervising activities or working on the front line – to do your job confidently and with pride in maintaining the highest health and safety standards.”

Sarah Kenny, CIP Sales and Marketing Manager responded to the appointment by saying: “The CIP Manual is a better resource for having Suzannah as both an editorial panel member and now Patron.  CIP is proud of its association with Build UK and the support that its Members give in ensuring that the Manual remains one of the go to information sources for up-to-date health and safety policies, procedures and guidelines.”

The Manual is available in Hardcopy, USB stick and online as well as via several industry leading information services including the Construction Information Service (CIS).
